Cancer Research Partnership Group
Many patients and public members work with research professionals and clinicians (e.g. doctors, nurses) and get actively involved in the different stages of research and associated activities. This is different from being a participant in a study.
The Lancashire & South Cumbria Cancer Research Partnership Group (CRPG) was set up to improve the way cancer research is prioritised, commissioned, undertaken and disseminated at a local level, informed by the current National Cancer Research agenda. Our group consists of patient volunteers affected by cancer alongside health care professionals involved with clinical trials.
Aims
The key aims of the group within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Research Network are:
- To provide a cancer research forum for sharing decision making between service users and service providers, regarding research priorities
- To add valued contributions towards all aspects of the research cycle
- To develop local cancer research projects at an appropriate level
- To train, support and facilitate service users and providers in contributing to the wider context of research activities
- To act in an advisory capacity to a range of interested parties, such as academics, practitioners and trainees regarding cancer research
- To support patients in having equal opportunity to take part in cancer clinical trials
Projects
Throughout the year, the CRPG members provide valuable help and ideas in promoting research within cancer. They share practice at national and local events, are keen to be involved in decision making at study set up, and set their own projects surrounding research. The following outlines how the group get involved:
- Raising Awareness of Cancer Clinical Trials
-
- The group produced a poster and a sentence that went into clinic appointment letters that would promote awareness of Cancer Clinical trials. This was followed up with a questionnaire to see how effective it had been. Read more…..
- Participation at the Involve Conference 2010
-
- Following on from the trials awareness project, the group put together and displayed a poster at the Involve conference to show what they had achieved
Some of the informative events that members have attended are:
- National Cancer Research Institute Cancer Conference
- Involve Conference
- NW People in Research Forum
- Royal College of Radiographers Initiatives in Research
Training events that have been available to group members:
- Macmillan Cancer Voices
- Macmillan Getting Involved
- Randomised Control Trials information day
The group has given their input into study information:
- Skin study - this is a study that was put together by the network clinical lead and research radiographer and discussed the Patient Information Sheet
- Telephone follow up study – Jane Huddlestone Grant officer LTHTR Research
Visitors who have spoken at the groups’ meeting include:
- Mr David Ardron – North Trent Consumer Research panel
- Prof. Chris Moore - North West Medical Physics
- Karen Inns – NCRI Consumer Liaison Group
National groups
- NCRI Clinical Studies Groups (CSG) – members of the public develop new ideas for Cancer Research. Their role is to oversee the development of the portfolio of cancer clinical research in the UK, helping to understand the views and interests of patients and the public on a range of cancer research issues.. There are currently 22 NCRI CSGs, including 15 cancer site specific Groups, six generic Groups and one Consumer Liaison Group.
- NCRI Consumer Liaison Group (CLG) - individuals with personal experiences of cancer join representatives of cancer support organisations, researchers and other interested professionals to improve the quality and value of cancer research. They raise public awareness of clinical research and cancer research in particular.
- NW People in Research Forum – this is a new organisation which aims to support patient and public involvement (PPI) and public engagement (PE) in health research in the North West.
